How Much Do You Win on 0 or 00 in Roulette?

Roulette may look simple from the outside, but the green zero pockets often leave people wondering how they work. Can you bet on them? Do they pay differently to the red and black numbers? And does the version of roulette you are playing change the outcome?

This blog will explain what happens if you bet on zero or double zero, how the payouts are calculated, and why the odds of winning are not quite the same in European and American roulette. By the end, you’ll understand exactly how these distinctive pockets fit into the game.

Can You Bet on Zero In Roulette?

Yes, you can place a straight-up bet on zero. This means you put a chip directly on the number, and if the ball lands in that pocket, the bet wins. The zero is green and does not belong to red, black, odd, or even.

Roulette wheels differ depending on the version:

  • European roulette has 37 pockets: numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero.

  • American roulette has 38 pockets: numbers 1 to 36, one zero, and a double zero.

The difference is small but important. In European roulette, the probability of winning a straight-up bet is 1 in 37, around 2.70%

In American roulette, the probability drops to 1 in 38, or about 2.63%. This extra pocket is why the house edge is 2.7% in European roulette compared with 5.26% in American roulette.

How Much Do You Win on 0 In Roulette?

A winning straight-up bet on zero pays 35 to 1 in both European and American roulette. So, a successful £1 bet would return £35 in winnings plus your stake, and a £10 bet could return £350 plus your stake.

But zero can also form part of other bets in European roulette:

  • Split bet (0 with 1, 2, or 3): Pays 17 to 1. For example, £2 on 0 and 1 would win £34 plus your stake if either number lands.

  • Street bet (0, 1, 2 or 0, 2, 3): Pays 11 to 1. A £1 bet would return £11 plus your stake if one of the three numbers comes up.

  • Corner bet (0, 1, 2, 3): Pays 8 to 1. A £5 bet would return £40 plus your stake if any of those four numbers appear.

In American roulette, zero can be used in the same types of bets with identical potential payouts. The only difference is the probability. Because the American wheel has 38 pockets, the chance of winning a straight-up bet is slightly lower. On average, a £1 bet on zero has an expected loss of about 5.3p in American roulette compared with 2.7p in European roulette.

How Much Do You Win on 00 In Roulette?

The double zero pocket only appears in American roulette. It is green, sits opposite the single zero, and can be bet on in exactly the same way as other numbers.

A successful straight-up bet on 00 also pays 35 to 1. For example, a £2 bet would return £70 in winnings plus your stake, and a £5 bet would return £175 plus your stake.

Double zero can also be included in split or corner bets, just like the single zero. In addition, American roulette offers a five-number bet, covering 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3.

The probability of 00 landing is 1 in 38, the same as for any other single number on the American wheel. The possible payout might look attractive, but the extra pocket means the odds of success are lower than in the European game.

Roulette is a random game of chance, so there is no way to predict where the ball will land. Betting on 0 or 00 can be interesting because of their unique place on the wheel, but the potential payouts are fixed and the house has the advantage in every version.

If you choose to play, it may help to decide on a spend limit before you begin, treat any winnings as a bonus, and remember that gambling should only ever be seen as entertainment.
