What Are Mystery Symbols?
Mystery symbols are special icons that appear on the reels of online slots. They often show as a question mark or as a symbol that does not appear in the paytable.
These symbols transform into other symbols on the reels, which can include wilds and high-paying symbols. They can also expand vertically or horizontally to cover a whole reel, increasing the chances of forming winning combinations.
Some mystery symbols have more complex behaviours. For example, the Mystery Reels Deluxe game by Red Tiger Gaming features symbols that can clone themselves in different positions across the grid and then reveal matching symbols.
Always check a slot game’s paytable. Most providers explain exactly how their mystery symbols work there, so it is worth looking before you spin the reels.

How Do Mystery Symbols Work?
Mystery symbols operate differently depending on the slot you are playing. Some slots only use them in the base game, while others feature them throughout, including during bonus rounds.
Take Towering Fortunes by Pragmatic Play as an example. Mystery symbols can appear at random and, when they land, transform into a matching symbol to help form winning combinations.
For instance, if you have two matching symbols on the first two reels and a mystery symbol lands on the third reel, it may convert into that same symbol and complete the combination.
In some games, mystery symbols always reveal high-paying symbols or wilds, which increases the potential value of a win. They can also be central to special features or bonus rounds.
For example, in Fortunium Gold Mega Moolah, when you unlock the Free Spins bonus game you may encounter multiple mystery symbols during the round. These can change the dynamic of the bonus and the symbols on screen.
Mystery symbols add an element of surprise to online slots and are a useful feature to consider when choosing a game. Understanding how they behave in a particular title helps you know what to expect during play.
